Safety Day 2025

Safety Day is an educational and recognition event that celebrates Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee (JOHSC), Local Safety Team (LST) & Worker Health & Safety Representatives from across the university. The day provides an excellent opportunity to engage with your colleagues who sit on safety committees and teams suited on campus as well as our many offsite work locations. It is also a great opportunity to acknowledge all members for their effort and commitment to making UBC a safe and healthy place to work.

Dr. Lisa Belanger: Create Strong, Agile Minds

About Lisa Belanger

Dr, Lisa Belanger is a Harvard-trained leadership coach, behaviour scientist, and CEO of Conscious Works. With a Ph.D. in Behavioural Medicine and a passion for science-backed performance, she helps leaders and organizations thrive through sustainable success. Lisa is also an author, keynote speaker, and the creator of the podcast Work Less, Produce More.

 

Tom Scholte: Effective and Non-Escalating Conflict Engagement

This interactive workshop will introduce you to Reflexive Conflict Management, a straightforward and effective tool for making “difficult conversations” more manageable and productive; event in situations of hierarchy and power imbalance. Mixing principles of Non-Violent Communication with insights from contemporary psychology, this workshop will blend theoretical explanation and participatory learning leaving you better equipped to undertake those critical conversations that you may have been avoiding.

About Tom Scholte

Tom Scholte is a Professor in the Department of Theatre and Film at UBC. His research includes the use of interactive theatre techniques for building conflict engagement capacity in organizational systems.

 

Tiegan Hobbs: On Shaky Ground: Understanding and Preparing for Earthquakes at UBC

Large earthquakes have happened in the past and are certain to occur in the future in southwest BC. This presentation will outline why this is the case and discuss ways we, as a society or as individuals, can prepare and respond to these events. Bring any questions to this session, and get ready to learn more about earthquake myths and misconceptions.

About Tiegan Hobbs

Dr. Tiegan Hobbs is a seismic risk scientist for the Geological Survey of Canada and an adjunct professor at the University of British Columbia in the Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences department. She uses various geologic, geophysical, and geotechnical datasets to better understand active fault lines, seismic risk, and impacts to communities.

UBC is easily accessible by public transit: the R4, 44, 84 and 99 express buses run directly to the Vancouver campus.Use the Trip Planning feature on the Translink website to find the most efficient routing from anywhere in the Metro Vancouver region.

Arriving by Vehicle:

To get to UBC from downtown Vancouver by car, cross the Burrard or Granville Street bridges, and then head west on 4th Avenue, 10th Avenue or 16th Avenue. To get to UBC from the airport, cross the Arthur Laing bridge and then head west on SW Marine Drive.

Car Share or Ride Hailing:

You will find reserved spots for car-shares such as Evo, MODO, and Zipcar. Ride-hailing is also available to and from campus for those without a personal vehicle. There are designated ride-hail spots for pick-up and drop-off.

Parking

There is plenty of paid visitor parking at UBC for personal vehicles. To find a parking lot, review the UBC Parking map (parking hourly/daily rates are also listed on this site).
